We’ve talked extensively about tendinitis and the best treatments for it.
Often times these issues are chronic In nature and some people have an on again/off again relationship with the pain and struggle to do the things they love to do.
Here’s 3 reasons why your issue isn’t getting better. And at the end i’ll give you 2 steps to get you started on the road of getting rid of your issue forever.
#1 Your isometrics aren’t HEAVY enough
To restore tendon health in a chronic tendon issue isometrics need to be HEAVY. Heavy is 8/10 effort. On the last couple sets you should be shaking.
Machines are more useful for this
cable stack for biceps tendon issues
leg press or knee extension for knee issues
hold weight or leg press for achilles issues
Load it up.
If you don’t have machines then shoot for a LONG duration hold, so 3 minutes.
So heavy and short (30-45s) or lighter and long (3 minutes)
Reason #1B would be you aren’t doing isometrics AT ALL.
#2 You aren’t modifying your activity
Tendon pain is related to activity. If you hurt after activity, then that activity was too much.
After resting to let the pain subside, you can’t return to the SAME level of activity because
that level of activity was ALREADY too much
Well, you can, but then the issue won’t get better. It’ll likely get worse
You have to take a step back, let the pain subside, the slowly ramp back up to your previous level.
A good rule of thumb is 1 take as many weeks as you were out.
#3 You’re being inpatient
Tendons have reduce blood supply, so healing is SLOW. Your recovery horizon is measured in months (maybe years), not weeks.
The time frame will depend on
how long you’ve dealt with it
how irritable it is
what you’re trying to do
So to the extreme if you’re like “I’ve had this knee pain for 5 years, it hurts just walking, but I play basketball 3x a week for 2 hours and just play through the pain.”
You better buckle up because it’s gonna take a long time to get right.
