A recent consult form requested that I help “bulletproof” his knee because he seems to injury it every few months playing sports.

I didn’t really do that, but I need to get this off my chest:
I think the term “bulletproof” is dumb.
My reasons are not that profound. As a military veteran that’s been shot at, “bulletproof” actual has a specific meaning. Using it as a metaphor doesn’t make sense to me.
It’s become a marketing slogan guru’s use to make something:
sound better than it is
purposely vague so you can’t examine its effectiveness.
But, if I WAS going to “bulletproof” you, the first step in this equation is:
What activity am I trying to “bulletproof” you for?
Then do that activity.
Some at first, a lot later, then more but faster.
That’s the only way to reduce the damage of all those bullets.
I’ve laid out the next steps in the following exessively bullet-pointed list:
Heavy isometrics
These should be heavy AND frequent.
7-8/10 effort, at LEAST 1x/day
Heavy carries
These are for STRENGTH, not endurance, so they should be HEAVY
Goal is 100 FEET, not METERS
Examples of what’s “heavy”
Farmers carries your deadlift max (split in each hand)
Overhead carry a weight you CAN’T press
Plyometrics
Plyos (and sprints) are the MOST forceful thing you can put your body through
Moving full speed, stopping, and changing direction requires all of your tissues to be healthy
Plyos are usually the missing piece in everyone’s rehab
Which is why you feel the need to “bulletproof” things in the first place. This was the case (as usual) with this recent consult. He had
previous knee injuries
half assed rehab
tried to return to higher level stuff but his body wasn’t ready for it
