The syndrome itself isn’t (that) bad, but the belief around it is.
Upper cross syndrome (UCS) has many names including (but not limited to)
Nerd Neck
Text Neck
Forward head posture
Quasimodo
In reality, there’s no standard objective way to measure it, but
You know it when you see it.
It punches you in the gut with disgust. It’s so bad your mom would slap you and tell you to stand up straight.
It’s so bad people will admit to me (without me even asking)
“I know I have BAD posture”
Anyway, enough jokes. If there’s no standard
Then how do I know if I have it?
There are some objective measurements that contribute to the syndrome. This include
limited neck ROM, usually in looking side to side and up
limited shoulder ROM, usually arms overhead and external rotation
limited thoracic spine movement, mostly with sitting up straight (and this also contributes to the neck and shoulder limitations)
pain in any of the areas above
Anytime you have a “collection” of items and no known cause, this gets call a “syndrome.”
You can have this posture and have ZERO pain. But like a mechanic offering free break inspections
I can find these limitations on anyone
In a perfect world you can treat one or two general things and those limitation clear up. Otherwise you end up treating the symptoms but never addressing the root cause.
Okay how do I address the root cause?
If you start from the inside out, step 1 in addressing this syndrome is the thoracic spine.
By opening up the t-spine and getting it to rotate and extend, the head and shoulders get put in a better position and will instantly have more ROM.
If the shoulders are able to move better, then you can actually USE the low traps and get the rhomboids to work how nature intended.
Luckily we have a mobility program that does just this, and when you subscribe I email it to you
If it’s a chronic issue, then you may need a little more targeted work to address the stiffness In the front of the shoulders/neck and stiffness in the back of the shoulders/ neck.
Luckily, since you subscribed, you also have access to our Neck and Shoulder Rehab protocols.
They are designed to exactly treat this. These are also included for our paid subscribers.
I don’t email them anymore, but they are located below.
