My most recent post op patient had a shoulder labrum repair (Bankhart) and he spent
6 weeks in a sling
can only do “gentle” range of motion until 3 months
Strengthen can’t start until 3 months
return to sport “probably” at 6 weeks
He’s in the Marines and is pretty active - so this is tough for him.
This is something that often gets overlooked when you get any surgery
How long and how involved is the recovery.
It is the MAIN reason that I’ll never get shoulder surgery for my torn rotator cuff.
I can’t AFFORD the recovery.
6 weeks in a sling (with shit sleep)
Another 6+ weeks to get my motion back (with routine trips to rehab)
Waiting 2-3 months to get my strength back
12 months to be “back to normal”
I’d be severely limited in ALL aspects of my life
playing with my kids
work
driving
getting dressed
sleeping
My shoulder will have to be NOT WORKING for me to even CONSIDER surgery.
Hence why I use my own shoulder rehab program on MYSELF to keep my shoulder strong, mobile, and functioning
Yes this same program:
This program is always available here > > > Shoulder Rehab 2.0
And you can upgrade you subscription and get it for 30% off.
In 3 months it’ll be the same program I use for the patient we started this email talking about.
Yes - 3 MONTHS.
That’s how long the doctor wants him to wait.
3 months? Seems excessive.
Maybe it is, maybe It isn’t. But that’s something you need to discuss with your surgeon IN DETAIL to avoid surprises like that.
As someone who works on soft tissue, I’ll add that, because the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, holding it still for 6 weeks will cause all the other muscles in that quadrant of the body (pecs, traps, lats, obliques, etc) to get incredibly tight. I’ve worked one people for 3 months - when they’re also doing PT - to get normal range of motion back.
